How to Prepare for Your First Ultrasound

How to Prepare for Your First Ultrasound

December 18, 2025

Your first ultrasound is one of the most exciting moments of pregnancy. It’s when your journey starts to feel real. Whether you’re feeling excited, nervous, or a little bit of both, it helps to know what to expect and how to prepare for this special appointment.

At Care Net of NNY, we’re here to walk alongside you and make sure you feel informed, supported, and cared for every step of the way.

What an Ultrasound Is and Why It Matters

An ultrasound is a safe, painless way to see what’s happening inside your womb. Using sound waves (not radiation), an image of your baby and uterus is created on a screen.

During your first ultrasound, the nurse or sonographer is looking to:

  • Confirm that your pregnancy is located in the uterus.
  • Estimate how far along you are.
  • Check for a heartbeat.
  • Determine if it’s a single or multiple pregnancy.

This early scan gives you and your care provider important information to guide your next steps in care.

When to Schedule Your First Ultrasound

Many women have their first ultrasound between 6 and 10 weeks of pregnancy. However, timing can vary based on your unique situation.

If you’re not sure how far along you are or when your last period was, don’t worry! Your provider can help you schedule the right time for your scan. Reach out to us regarding any questions you have. We’d be happy to walk alongside you.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Here are a few simple things you can do to make your first ultrasound go smoothly:

  1. Drink Water Beforehand
A full bladder helps create a clearer image of your uterus. Try drinking about 16–24 ounces of water about an hour before your appointment.
  2. Arrive a Few Minutes Early
Give yourself time to complete any forms and relax before your scan.
  3. Dress Comfortably
Wear a two-piece outfit (so you can easily adjust your clothing for the procedure).
  4. Bring a Support Person (If You’d Like)
Many moms like to have someone with them for emotional support. It’s a special moment to share.
  5. Write Down Questions
This is a great time to ask questions about your pregnancy, next steps, or any symptoms you’ve noticed.

What Happens During the Ultrasound

You’ll lie back on a comfortable exam table, and a trained nurse or sonographer will apply gel to your abdomen. Then, a small handheld device called a transducer is moved over your belly to capture images on the screen.

Depending on how early your pregnancy is, a transvaginal ultrasound might be used instead to get a clearer picture. This is common in early pregnancy.

During the scan, you may see your baby for the first time, and if it’s the right stage, you might even hear a heartbeat. Many moms describe this as one of the most emotional moments of their journey.

You’ll receive important information about your pregnancy, including how far along you are and what your next steps might be.
