Bringing Baby Home: A First-Time Parent’s Checklist

October 10, 2025

Becoming a parent for the first time is exciting, emotional, and a little overwhelming. There’s so much to think about as you prepare to welcome your little one home. Whether you’re weeks away from your due date or want to plan ahead, having a simple checklist can make those early days less stressful.

Here’s a practical guide to help first-time parents feel more confident and prepared.

Prepare a Safe and Comfortable Space

Preparing a safe space for your baby to rest is key. Consider having a firm crib mattress and fitted sheet without pillows or loose blankets for safety. Research your crib or bassinet to ensure they meet current safety standards. A baby monitor with audio or video to watch over your little one. A night light can be helpful for those late-night feedings. A few swaddles or sleep sacks nearby will come in handy.

Safety Tip: Keep the crib clear of stuffed animals, bumper pads, and extra bedding to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Stock Up on Baby Essentials

Newborns may be tiny, but they come with big needs. Some items to have on hand include newborn and size 1 diapers, a diaper changing station or pad, a diaper pail or disposal system, and a baby bathtub or safe bathing setup. When buying items that will come into contact with your baby’s skin, consider unscented lotion, soap, and baby wipes.

Ask about how our Baby Boutique can help you start checking items off your list!

Pro Tip: Babies grow fast. Keep a small stock of each diaper size instead of buying a lot at once.

The Basics of Clothing

A whole closet full of clothes isn’t necessary; just the essentials that make changing easy. Consider keeping 5-7 onesies on hand that are either long or short-sleeved, depending on the season. You could also keep 3-5 sleepers or footed pajamas, a few soft hats and mittens to prevent scratching, and socks. Make sure you pack a going-home outfit!

Pro Tip: Keep comfort and easy access for diapers in mind. Simple snaps or zippers are your best friend at 2 a.m.

Car Seats and Traveling

You and your baby will not be able to leave the hospital without a properly installed car seat. Make sure you have a rear-facing infant or convertible car seat that meets current safety standards. The seat should be properly installed in your vehicle before your baby arrives. A soft blanket for colder weather is always helpful, but be sure to place the blanket over the straps.

Safety Tip: Many local fire departments or hospitals offer free car seat installation checks.

Feeding and Health Supplies

Whether you plan to breastfeed or bottle-feed, preparation helps those first few weeks feel less hectic. Some helpful items you can include on your shopping list include a nursing pillow, burp cloths, formula, breast pump and storage bag, a baby thermometer, and a nasal aspirator. Bottles and nipples are useful as well, even if you decide to breastfeed, as they can be used later for pumped milk.

Postpartum and Parent Care

Caring for yourself is just as important as caring for your baby! Recovery and rest make a difference. Make sure to include things like comfortable clothing and nursing bras, maxi pads and postpartum care items, a water bottle and snacks, and a support system. This system can be made up of friends, family, or your local pregnancy center.

Pro Tip: You don’t have to do this alone. Accepting help is a sign of strength, not weakness. We would love to be included in your support system.
