In July of 2022, the United States felt as if it erupted as the Supreme Court overturned a fifty-year-old ruling, known as Roe v Wade. Voices on all sides have been sharing their opinions and assumed implications of the overturn. However, amidst the cacophony of opinions, many women continue to find themselves in unplanned pregnancies. As they navigate somewhat uncharted territory, they may feel overwhelmed by the volume of information… and misinformation. At Care Net of NNY, the uncertainty does not change our focus. We seek to help educate, support, and empower women to make the best decisions for them in their unplanned pregnancy. If you find yourself in an unplanned pregnancy, call us today at (315)782-5433.

Why does Roe v Wade matter with abortion laws?

In 1973, the Supreme Court decided that the federal government could no longer completely outlaw abortion. Instead, each state would determine at what point in a woman’s pregnancy abortion would be illegal. This case was referred to as Roe v Wade. [1] Other laws and cases over the years have been brought back to the Supreme Court. For example, in 1992, the Supreme Court again revisited Roe v Wade, but determined to uphold the ruling and instead add a few stipulations for women seeking an abortion. This case was known as Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v Casey. [2] Until recently, Roe v Wade has remained in effect.

What happened in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization?

A court case concerning abortion began in Mississippi and eventually made its way to the Supreme Court. After much deliberation, they determined that the original Roe v Wade ruling was not constitutional, so they overturned the ruling from 1973. [3] Now, individual state legislatures will determine their own abortion laws. So, laws will vary state by state.

What even is the Supreme Court?

As outlined in the Constitution, the Supreme Court is the highest court within the Judicial Branch. Nine Justices regularly deliberate on various laws and court cases to determine whether they align with the Constitution. They have the power to change or overturn a law. As they did with Roe v Wade. [4]

What will be the future of women’s reproductive rights?

Despite the overturn of Roe v Wade, women still have options when it comes to their reproductive health. The Supreme Court’s ruling impacts abortion but does not address other reproductive rights. Therefore, women still have a choice. As you explore your own reproductive health journey, you can call us at (315)782-5433 for free, confidential guidance.

Currently, no state seeks to criminalize a woman for having an abortion or seeking an abortion. However, women may continue to feel alone in their unplanned pregnancy. So, at Care Net NNY, we offer compassionate and confidential care for all women. To not walk the journey of an unplanned pregnancy alone, call us at (315)782-5433.

What if I need life-saving medical care because of a pregnancy complication?

The Roe v Wade overturn does not prevent any pregnant woman from receiving lifesaving, emergent medical care. In fact, the Supreme Court explicitly sought to protect the life of a mother in their ruling. [5] So, treatment for an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage remains both necessary and legal.

How will an ectopic pregnancy be treated in the future?

The Supreme Court decision does not alter how an ectopic pregnancy will be treated. In an ectopic, the pregnancy implants outside of the uterus and can be life-threatening. Treatment usually entails a doctor administering a medication that stops the pregnancy from growing or requires surgical intervention to remove the pregnancy. So, doctors are legally able to continue treating women for an ectopic pregnancy. In fact, before reaching a decision, all women who are pregnant should take the steps necessary to determine if their pregnancy is viable. At CareNet of NNY, we offer cost-free medical care to help a woman determine the viability of her pregnancy. Call us today at (315)782-5433!
